Who started it all?
Tom and Barbara Pratten. They were two missionaries from Dorset. They started out providing medical assistance to injured and ill tibetans fleeing the chinese takeover. Barbara was a registered nurse and so they set up a small medical dispensary in Pedong. At this time, they rented a two room house and accommodated 10 children who were tibetan refugees! This was the very early version of the school which went on to move to the current site.
When was the school founded?
In 1961, the school started at the current site. At this time there were only 10 boys!
What was the ethos of the school when it first started?
The objective was to care for underprivileged children by providing them with free boarding, food, clothing and education. The aim was to teach them useful skills and knowledge to live a decent life, earn a living and live a life of dignity.
Climate change is having a significant impact on life at the school
The region is being adversely affected by increasingly unpredictable weather and the effects of climate change. Landslides and power outages are becoming a regular part of life.
